Introduction:
This conference focuses on some recent developments on 3manifold
theory. Recent work of Perelmann and Hamilton on Thurston's
geometrizaton conjecture has changed the study of 3manifolds. This
event can be considered as the 3dimensional counterpart of
PoincareKoebe's uniformization theory for Riemann surfaces. From
this point of view, one should consider the resolution of the
geometrization conjecture as the beginning of a new research
activities for 3manifolds. Just like in the theory of Riemann
surfaces, the surging of Teichmuller theory has completely change
the landerscape of Riemann surfaces, the future direction of
3manifolds should be on hyperbolic 3manifolds. There are many
important problems in the field. The topics to be discussed in the
conference include: the volume conjecture, angle structure and
hyperbolic 3manifolds, and angle structures and volume
optimization.
